Los Pinos Trestle
Cumbres & Totlec 484, a former Rio Grande K36 2-8-2, is bringing the daily excursion train back towards Chama after a pleasant lunch stop in Osier, CO. On the way up to the 10,000-foot summit at Cumbres Pass, the line makes a long side trip north up the length of the Los Pinos valley to gain altitude, before reversing direction via a horsehoe curve at the apex and continuing the climb.heading south along the other side.
In this shot from the side of the valley, the train is heading north prior to reaching the horsehose, crossing the Los Pinos River on a pile trestle. In a few minutes the train will be heading the opposite direction on tracks just below where I am standing.
The grass is dry and brown but its a beautiful Fall day in the mountains along the Colorado-New Mexico border.
