The Auto Train
The original Auto Train was a privately owned passenger train that began operations in 1971 between Lorton, VA and Sanford FL over the RF&P and Seaboard Coast Line Railroads.
When this picture of the Lorton terminal was shot in 1975, the operation was in full swing and turning a profit. Subsequently an ill-considered second operation from Florida to Louisville, KY plus some untimely derailments spelled financial disaster, and the train ceased operations in 1981. Subsequently the service was revived by Amtrak and continues to operate today.
Visible in this picture on the fueling pad are three General Electric U36B mainline units plus the Lorton switcher, a very elderly Baldwin unit, all painted in the psychedelic Auto Train paint scheme. Some of the original fully-enclosed auto carriers are visible at far right, along with three dome cars which were a feature of the operation.
