The Big Hook
Back in the day, every railroad has a rail-mounted crane stationed every few hundred miles along the way, ready to deal with derailments, wrecks and other requirements. Here we see a fine example on the Nevada Northern, in the midst of hoisting a small, crippled flatcar onto a larger cousin for transport back to the shop. 2-8-0 #93 is the power for the wreck train, while in the distance 4-6-0 #40 holds clear with a passenger consist.
Not much in this photo would tell you the year was 2007.
