The Chessie Safety Express
Although CSX is not currently open to operating steam on its lines, that was not always the case. In fact, CSX was a major steam sponsor. One of its bigger efforts was the "Chessie Safety Express" which roamed the system during 1980 and 1981 promoting public awareness of the dangers of unsafe behavior at railroad grade crossings. The train was judged to be a success as grade crossing accidents on the system declined by 10% after it operated.
