In my opinion there are few machines that better embody the spirit of American ingenuity than the Shay geared logging lokie as first pioneered by Ephriam Shay back in 1881. The design was later refined and popularized by the Lima Locomotive Works with the results that you see here.
This photo shows the connection of the vertical piston rod (one of three) with the big horizontal crankshaft of Shay #11 on the Cass Scenic Railroad. The crankshaft connects with the three trucks of the locomotive via gears.
Also visible are the eccentric rods that drive the valve events on the cylinder.
