Going Like Sixty
The picture makes it seem as if the Summerville Steam Special is pounding across Cane Creek in Tryon, GA at something like 60 miles per hour, but the reality is more like 16. The Special, operated frequently by the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum offers passengers a glimpse of rural Georgia on a 100+ mile round trip from the museum grounds in Chattanooga. Track speed is 20 mph but the steamers still put on a good show. This day was even more special in that it was headed up by both 2-8-0 630 followed by 2-8-2 4501.
Ultra-dry conditions in the Southeast are made apparent by the completely dry creek bed (I walked across) and the thick haze of smoke from numerous area wildfires.
