Along the Cement Wall
Among the many photo locations along the Durango & Silverton line through the canyon of the Animas River, the spot known as the "Cement Wall" a bit south of the Cascade Wye stands out. Forced to build right on the edge of the river by the sheer rock cliff, a vertical retaining wall was required to keep the river from scouring out the roadbed. Jagged rock, blazing autumn foliage, a foaming river, plus the green and blue of the background combine to create a quintessential Colorado narrow gauge tableau.
On this Fall day in 2016, the "Silverton Mixed" photo special makes its way north towards Silverton along the Cement Wall.
