The Chessie Safety Express
Back in 1981, the the Chessie System had a different attitude when it came to steam than successor CSX does today. During that year, the railroad sponsored the "Chessie Safety Express", which roamed the system promoting grade crossing safety behind C&O 614. The train is seen here heading west on the B&O main line towards Cumberland MD.
The big Northern was one of the last mainline steam locomotives built, with its commercial operating career spanning just 7 years from the time it rolled off the assembly line in 1948. She was revived and operated in excursion service for a number of years, but today she is out of service and awaiting a rebuilding which may never occur.
