The Southern Railroad never embraced the Superpower concept and back in the day its roster did not include any locomotives with a four-wheel trailing truck. But here we have a vision of "what might have been" in the form of Southern 2-8-4 2716 (actually C&O 2716 in disguise), which ran in the Southern Steam program for a limited time in the early eighties. This photo shows the big Berk on a trip between Alexandria and Lynchburg, VA on a steamy day in August 1982. The crowd in the open car Lookout Mountain behind the tender sure seem to be enjoying the ride.
