Back in the days of revenue steam, the roundhouse was a busy, gritty place where the labor-intensive steam locomotives received the TLC they required. This example in Trier [West] Germany was a typical example.
An interesting variety of motive power is arrayed around the turntable. At far left is the nose of a lithe 012 Pacific-type 4-6-2 passenger locomotive. In the center is a Class 042 2-8-2 Mikado, a general purpose freight hauler, with a fat-boilered three-cylinder Class 044 2-10-0 heavy freight mauler immediately to the right. At far right, the tenders of two additional Class 042's can be seen.
What an opportunity it was for a 17-year old to be able to wander about with his camera!
