The Taeiri Gorge Railway is an excursion line running inland up its beautiful namesake gorge from the coastal city of Dunedin on the South Island of New Zealand.
Here we see Class DJ #1209, built by Mitsubishi in the late 60's and one of six owned the the railway, as it runs around its train at Pukerangi. Most trains turn here for a round trip journey of 116 km, traversing a number of terrific cast-iron viaducts along the way. A few trains each week continue on to the town of MIddlemarch, another 19 km up the track and the end of the line.
Note the new "Panorama Car" with the glass roof panels. A true dome car would be impossible as there are a number of tunnels along the way which form a very tight fit even for the limited dimensions of this 3'6" gauge equipment.
