Beacon Park Yard in Boston marked the terminus of the Penn Central (formerly New York Central) Boston & Albany line. Both merchandise freights including refrigerated boxcars and intermodal trains tied up here, with the pocket intermodal ramp around the curve behind the tower. Since this shot was taken 40 years ago in 1976, with the underlying land worth a fortune, now-owner CSX has sold the property and pulled its operations back to Worcester for the most part.
Looks like the crew of the SW1500 and ex-NYC caboose at left has just gone off duty. Meanwhile an older SW7 is tied onto a string of empty TOFC flats at center. An ex-New Haven caboose is visible just beyond, while the Boston skyline looms in the background.
