Built to Last
The massive abutment of the Hell Gate Bridge dwarfs a couple of Conrail U-Boat diesels on the point of the Oak Point Turn. The train is the transfer run between Conrail's Oak Point Yard in the Bronx and the Long Island Rail Road interchange at Fresh Point in Queens. In this photo the train is easing back into the Bronx having just crested the grade in mid-span.
Today the train still runs under CSX auspices, but this line is reputed to be among the many that CSX is considering spinning off as part of its upcoming restructuring.
