In railfan photograpy, as everywhere else, things don't always work out according to plan. Here's an example of a carefully chosen location on an uphill S-curve. After about an hour's wait, 611's exhaust can be heard...but wait, the gates are going down at the crossing behind me way too early....oh no! A westbound! The power slides by, dynamic brakes whining, followed by a long string of stack cars. The 611's exhaust gets louder...will the westbound clear in time?....the empties keep coming....here comes 611's smoke around the far curve, pounding up the grade....she storms by in a fury of sound and smoke...and 10 seconds later the last stack car passes.
Oftentimes you win, but sometimes not..
