The Georgetown Loop
Georgetown Loop Railroad #12 tiptoes across the high trestle that forms the core of "The Loop", an iron lariat that encircles the valley in which Georgetown, CO is situated. Unseen in this photo is the lower portion of the line which passes under the far end of the trestle. The loop is located towards the right, as the line, gaining altitude all the while, describes a full 360 degrees until it achieves the far wall of the canyon once again via the trestle and then keeps climbing towards the terminus in Silverthorne.
"The Loop" keeps the grade to a manageable but still very steep steep four percent.
