The Seaboard Coast Line branch from Tampa to St. Petersburg cuts through downtown Clearwater FL on one of the town's north-south streets. This was formerly Atlantic Coast Line trackage. While Amtrak service beyond Tampa ended in 1984, the line is still operated by CSX for local freights.
CSX has recently offered to sell the entire line to the Florida DOT for use as a commuter line into Tampa. The former parallel Seaboard Air Line trackage today is the Fred Marquis Pinellas Rail-Trail.
In this view, an SCL way freight prepares to duck into the clear in order to permit the passage of the afternoon Amtrak trains.
