It's hard for me to imagine what it must have been like for the early surveyors who first rode into the wild mountains of southern Colorado with the mission of determining where to throw the slim-gauge rails of the Denver and Rio Grande. We are fortunate indeed that it is still possible to travel through these beautiful landscapes on a steam-powered train.
Here a Cumbres & Toltec daily excursion is heading into the Los Pinos Valley on its way back from Osier to Chama, NM. The climb up to Cumbres Pass is relatively gentle in this direction and the big K36 will have no trouble with this longer-than-normal fall foliage train.
