Durango and Silverton K28 473 leads bigger sister K36 482 past the Iron Gate subdivision about 10 miles north of Durango. The two locomotives are pulling hard up Hermosa Hill with a full-capacity summer train.
10 days ago the catastrophic "416 Fire" got started in this immediate vicinity. The exact cause has yet to be officially determined, although the spark from a locomotive is one possibility. As of this writing over 20,000 acres have been charred, but thankfully with no loss of life or even structures.
The railroad is currently shut down and the financial strain will be enormous. We can only hope that this irreplaceable treasure survives the trauma.
