A train of M2 electric MU commuter cars heads across the rolling lift bridge spanning the MIanus River in Cos Cob, CT. The lift bridge, located between the tall wire towers, opens frequently to allow the passage of high-masted sailboats seeking access to Long Island Sound just a short distance beyond the bridge.
Close examination will show that the railroad caternary is interrupted over the span to provide free clearance for the bridge to rotate to a near-vertical position. Trains coast across with their pantographs reaching upward toward the sky. Once across the span the pantographs re-engage the wire as it gradually tapers down towards normal operating height.
