After heading west for several miles through the high desert of Colorado, the Rio Grande narrow gauge turns south to begin the assault on the high mesa and quickly crosses Ferguson Trestle, the north-south alignment and configuration of which make it an ideal location for capturing sunrise and sunset photos.
K36 487 is the star. Visible on the gangway is the silhouette of the fireman building up steam for the imminent climb. Steam drifts from the turbogenerator exhaust and the smokestack bears evidence of the fireman's efforts.
