High in the Alleghenies
As the Cass Scenic Railroad makes its ascent of Bald Knob, WV, the ecosystem changes from forests of oak, hickory, birch, beech and maple trees to evergreen groves dominated by red spruce. Here we see Shay #5 resting quietly on the wye not far from the 4,730' summit after toting a photo freight up the mountain.
The air is crisp and cool and the mossy woods are deeply quiet, the only sound being the soft panting of #5's compressor the the whine of her turbogenerator.
