A Cumbres and Toltec photo freight is all but lost in the immensity of the high desert as it climbs the escarpment west of Antonito, CO. The train is about to pass one of the remaining telephone cabins that were the train crews' communication lifeline back in the day. At this location, known as Lava, the track loops around to the right and eventually reaches the spot on which I was standing as I took this shot, climbing all the way.
In the background, the snow covered Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the highest of which exceed 14,000 feet, loom from across the San Luis Valley.
