The Western Maryland Scenic Railroad operates over the former Western Maryland main line, and for many years has featured stalwart 2-8-0 734, originally from Michigan but remodeled into a very credible replica of a WM steamer. The 734 has recently gone out of service pending a thorough and much-needed rebuild. Her place will be taken next year by the newly operable C&O 2-6-6-2 1309, now in the final stages of her return from static museum piece to living machine.
Here the 734 storms upgrade around the landmark horseshoe curve above Cumberland, nicknamed Helmstetter in honor of the farmer's homestead it encircles.
