Back to Work
The hard-working folks at the Durango & Silverton enjoyed their day off for Christmas, but on the day after, it's back to work. A heavy holiday snowfall has blanketed the rails and in order to clear the track for the scheduled Cascade Turn, K28 #473 gets down to business in a role she has fulfilled many times since she rolled off the Alco shop floor in Schenectady, NY back in 1923.
The powerful little Mike has her work cut out for her as her big plow clears the line while the flanger behind her tender pulls the snow from between the rails and moves it out to the side. Progress is slow and it's going to be a long day. But what a show for those lucky enough to be trackside!
Sadly, such big snow events have become a rarity since 2008, when this shot was taken. Whether that is a long-term product of climate change or simply a natural cycle remains to be seen.
