Arrivals and Departures
Based on the Train Schedule board and the clock, the next train due into the Roanoke Depot looks to be #24, the local from Portsmouth, VA.
Of course, the last #24 arrived in Roanoke long ago, and the station has not seen a scheduled passenger train since the dawn of Amtrak in 1971. But all is not lost, as the station has been beautifully restored as the home of the O. Winston Link Museum, and Amtrak service is expected to return later this year when you will once again be able to board a train in Roanoke bound for New York City.
But what a place this must have been in its heyday, with chunky 0-8-0 switchers darting about, servicing passenger trains drawn by magnificent J Class 4-8-4's and K2 Mountains, while the formidable Y-6 and Class A articulateds rolled through with their trains of coal and merchandise freight.
