It's pretty obvious that neither the builder nor the purchaser of this General Electric E-44 freight motor wanted to waste any money on industrial styling. Nonetheless, these big units radiated the aura of power, enhanced by the whine of their blowers when under load and those big, imposing three-axle trucks.
This unit, still in its Pennsy paint scheme but now owned by Penn Central was photographed at Waverly Yard in August of 1971. Judging by the open window and the engineer in his T-shirt, it was a warm day.
