Headed for the Barn
On a chilly but clear winter afternoon in 1973, a local switch crew heads west along the Massachusetts Turnpike extension in Back Bay, Boston bound for home base at nearby Beacon Park Yard. The little SW-1 switcher is a real veteran, having been in service since prior to Pearl Harbor in January 1941. Behind the 8472 is a former New York Central bay-window caboose.
The canvas cover on the front of the locomotive covering the radiator intake is intended to keep the radiator water a bit warmer so as to supply some heat to the cab for the benefit of the train crew.
