A Phoenix Rises
After being out of service for some 19 years, Durango & Silverton K-28 476 returned to the high iron last week. The Mike received extensive work in the D&S shops. Elsewhere, mechanical foreman Randy Babcock has been quoted: “In addition to the FRA-mandated repairs and inspections, the crew has rebuilt the locomotive’s wheels and drivers; replaced the smoke box; repaired some cylinder and frame problems; switched out its front and rear flue sheets; and revamped the boiler". Whew!
It was great to see the 476 on a break-in run. The mechanical crew of the D&S deserves much credit and gratitude for this terrific achievement.
Here, the 476 is ascending Hermosa Hill as seen from Highway CO 550 with her light three-car train, stretching her legs for the first time in almost two decades.
