The Freedom Train
40 years ago, a Wall Street commodity trader and railroad enthusiast named Ross Rowland put together an exhibit train for the national bicentennial. Equipped with display cars carrying American artifacts, the Freedom Train crisscrossed the nation for two years. Drawn by steam, the train used big Reading T-1 2101 in the east and SP Daylight 4449 in the west.
Here the train is heading north up the Boston & Maine's Connecticut Valley line from East Deerfield, MA, piloted by the B&M's bicentennial diesel which has been renumbered 200 for the occasion.
