The "S" Curve at Elizabeth
Back in the day I spent many hours at the Elizabeth NJ station photographing the many trains on the Northeast Corridor and the less frequent trains on the Jersey Central below. Hence I was intrigued when a recent helicopter flight provided this current view from an altitude of about 1,000 feet.
The station is visible in the foreground, with a NY-bound NJ Transit train, in "push" mode with the loco on the rear, stopped on the northbound side. The station was rebuilt a few years ago and the platforms shifted north off the curve to their current location. Visible at center-right is the old preserved Jersey Central station with its clock tower and the abandoned four-track line passing under the current platforms about at the middle of the stopped train. The "S" curve stretches out to the south towards the upper portion of the picture.
