Climbing "The Loop"
Even the powerful former West Side Lumber narrow-gauge 3-truck Shay #9 can't handle a 9-car train by itself up the steep grades of the Georgetown Loop Railroad. Diesel #130, a 500 hp General Electric 52-tonner originally built for U.S. Gypsum, lends a hand.
The train is traversing the high curved trestle that is the big show-stopper along the route. Visible at bottom is the lower portion of the railroad which describes a full spiral as it climbs up alongside Clear Creek from Georgetown CO to Silver Plume.
