Taking a Breather
With her train turned and servicing completed, Union Pacific 844 awaits the scheduled departure time for the Frontier Days Special to depart Cheyenne bound for Denver. A Chicago-bound double-stack train rolls by in on the adjacent track.
The 844 was the last of the UP's FEF-3 Class locomotives, the nomenclature denoting the third and final version of the railroad's Four-Eight-Four steam locomotives. While intended primarily as fast and powerful passenger power, the FEF-3's also performed capably in fast freight service.
THe 844 is notable as the only Class I steam locomotive that was never officially retired.
