Not Quite What it Seems
What appears to be a two-unit lash-up on this Long Island Rail Road commuter is actually not. Alco FA 606 is a power/control cab but doesn't provide any tractive effort for the train. It's prime mover and generator are devoted to literally keeping the lights on (and heat) in the passenger cars as C420 202 lacks an auxiliary generator for that purpose. Normally, 202 would have been found on the rear of the train in push-pull configuration, but it appears that 606 has had a problem this morning that necessitated putting 202 on the point. The train is also running on the left-hand track as it passes Syosset High School on its way to Port Jefferson, so things are seriously out of whack this day.
