The daily train on the Cumbres & Toltec is on its way back to Chama, NM from the mid-point lunch stop at Osier. The typical operating pattern calls for the locomotives to operate through from one end of the line to the other, swapping trains during the lunch stop. Each train then returns to its point of origin, but with a different locomotive in the afternoon versus the morning. Most of the passengers return to their point of origin, but some switch trains to cover the whole route, coming back in the bus.
Here the Chama-originating train is loping up the Los Pinos Valley on a fine October afternoon in 2016. The nine-car train is dwarfed by its surroundings.
